Medical care changing with the times aboard cruise ships

On-board blood transfusions, virtual consultations with land-based doctors and electronic recordkeeping that allows for quick alerts if a virus is about to break out: this is the present and future of medicine on cruise ships.

For the first time, the annual Cruise Shipping Miami conference devoted sessions to the use of technology in cruise ship medicine and health and wellness tourism; the exhibition area included a small medical pavilion, another first.

George Foyo, chief administrative officer at Baptist Health South Florida and a panelist Wednesday, said he envisions a near future where a crew member or passenger in port abroad could have a face-to-face connection with a specialist in South Florida via the Internet to get a diagnosis. The same could be possible from a ship with satellite connection.

Baptist Health South Florida Maritime Medical Services has treated cruise line crew for the last 15 years when ships are in port in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Medical Alert Dog v Service Dog?

I was diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines and noticed that my current dog has the tendency to act abnormal before I have an episode. I want to get her trained as an official Medical Alert Dog, with the right training I think she would perform the tasks

A medical alert/response dog is simply a type of service dog.

The same requirements apply to them as to all other service dogs. For example, your condition must be disabling (not all migraines are) and the dog must be trained to do something
