Some marine biology colleges have aquariums located on campus for marine observations, while other marine biology colleges allow students to tailor their own independent research projects. Many marine biology colleges or colleges that are more science focused, allow students to earn a certificate in marine biology, along with their bachelor’s degree (usually in biological science). Marine biology colleges generally offer courses and labs in the following areas: physics, chemistry, marine botany, geology, aquatic pollution biology, oceanography, microbiology, and animal physiology.   A marine biology certificate is usually recommended if the college doesn’t offer a marine biology major.   Prior to considering marine biology colleges, students must remember that in order to perform independent research, marine biologists are first required to earn a Ph. D. degree. Some of the common admissions requirements for marine biology colleges include advanced high school courses in biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, and English composition.   Students who major in marine biology focus their studies on organisms that live in marine bodies of water. When researching marine biology colleges, students should evaluate the equipment that the college provides, as well as the lab facilities and clinical ocean exploratory opportunities.   Therefore, those high school students who choose to attend marine biology colleges should plan their course work accordingly.   Marine biology colleges are typically located near the ocean so that students can gain practical experience. Marine Biology as a Career

Wartime population faced 'eating plankton to avert food shortages'

Geoffrey Moore, a professor in marine biology at University of London, has discovered the plans in the archives at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) near Oban, in Scotland.

He found letters between Sir Graham Kerr, of Glasgow University, and Sir Alister Hardy from Hull University.

Together they discussed the project with the sceptical Richard Elmhirst, the then director of SAMS when it was based in Millport, Ayreshire.

The idea was to capture tons of copepods in the tidal areas of sea lochs along the west coast of Scotland.

In one letter, Kerr wrote to Elmhirst: "It is simply silly to brush the matter aside as of no importance when one remembers the sea off our coasts is often soup-like in its richness with nutritive material over areas of many square miles ... no doubt you have tested for yourself the tastiness of some types of plankton."

Sir Alister calculated that ten, 30 square metre nets could in 12 hours catch enough plankton to feed 357 people.
