In the current project we will investigate how neural ensembles in multiple brain areas respond to visual images, and which types of transmitter receptor in these areas are important for perceptual discrimination. The project will be conducted as part of the UvA's research priority program Brain and Cognition, in a multidisciplinary collaboration combining psychological, neurobiological, neuroimaging and image-processing research (see www. By now we have some idea of the brain systems involved, but the neural mechanisms and ensemble interactions correlated to perception remain unresolved. To this end, we will apply multi-area ensemble recordings combined with neuroopharmacology in freely behaving rodents. At a later stage of the project, results will be used to design new computational models of perceptual discrimination. Specifically, we will focus on the interaction between sensory and memory systems in this project.

JD : First, it’s a real honor. The confidence and support that so many people have given me are overwhelming and humbling. We are the world’s leading neuroscience and cognitive science department, and handing me the reins to that is really an honor and a challenge. … It’s a lot to do. Over the last 10 years we’ve increased our faculty size almost 50 percent to nearly 40 primary faculty. We have tremendous faculty, and together, we bring tremendous diversity in techniques and research questions. Indeed, our strength is our diversity, from molecular neuroscience, to systems neuroscience, to computational neuroscience, all the way up to cognitive neuroscience. But that diversity is also something that we have to work hard to integrate, to make sure that we have research that cuts across those lines, to make sure we maintain and grow a sense of community in the entire department, and to leverage that diversity to educate our undergraduate and graduate students. Now that we have gone through this great period of growth under Mriganka Sur’s leadership, we now need to consolidate our educational mission. Indeed, my main missions as department head are to strengthen our education programs and to really foster a spirit of community across the department.

I'm thinking of doing a degree in cognitive neuroscience, and I'm wondering what jobs require a degree like this? What does someone trained in cognitive neuroscience actually do?
Also, is it better to do an undergraduate in something more
I think you could be a school psychologist at a high school.

Which is better a degree in just psychology or psychology and cognitive neuroscience?

I've got my Uni offers and I'm trying to decide which course would be better. Would I be given an advantage or disadvantage to having a degree in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience?
Help??
I would go for Cognitive Neuroscience because with neuroscience I presume you will be looking for ways of curing brain disorders and researching future cures but psychology would only be helping people with what is already there - I could be wrong but
