Explore your inner science geek

A couple of weeks ago, I was fortunate to be a part of Coastal Ridge Elementary School's science fair. The cafeteria and gym were bursting with energy, excitement, and the tangy scent of vinegar.
Susan Hirsch was the organizational and inspirational wizard behind this fantastic event, which was sponsored by the CRES Community Action Team (CAT). There were more than 80 exhibits by 90 students. The "kid-chosen" projects were researched, created, and presented by the students on their own time. It was not a school-mandated assignment. Did anyone invent a renewable energy source or map out a new DNA sequence? No, but the kids were beaming with pride, and I got to see my first purple volcano with glitter lava.
Why all the excitement? Kids love science. It's that simple. Oh, and they like things that explode.
Why science? It's all about figuring out how the world works. If you think about it, a kid's job is to learn as much as he can about how to navigate through this fascinating world. Which bugs sting? How can I get the maximum lift when hurling my plate across the kitchen? Why does my bruise change colors? What can I do to really tick off my sister? You could classify these as biology, physics, physiology, and psychology, but it's all science, and kids soak it up.
