Bus rides offer help, hope with truancy issues

Marissa Yellow Horse never saw herself as the truancy type.

But during her sophomore year at Rapid City Central High School, she ended up on probation for truancy after missing multiple days of school.

Yellow Horse, now 18, lived with her mom near S.D. Highway 79 south of Rapid City, miles from Central. "We had a van that worked sometimes," she said.

When it didn't work, for instance when it was cold, Yellow Horse struggled to get to school.

"It wasn't because I was skipping. I just couldn't get rides," she said.

The family eventually moved closer to Central so Yellow Horse could walk. Over time, her father was able to buy her a car. She now is finishing high school.

Jackie Swanson, a teacher at Central, hopes that recent changes to transportation accessibility in the Rapid City Area Schools district will help students like Yellow Horse finish school.

The school district and the city worked out a plan this month to allow students at Central and the academies to ride Rapid Ride, the city's public transit, using their student IDs. Rapid Ride bus drivers will document each time a signed-up student rides and bill the district for the transportation. The district already has funding in place for such transportation costs.
